My dh was raised in a third world country where animals are considered, well, animals. Hardly family members, that's for sure. First my greybies were banished from the bed (okay, two 70# dogs *do* make it hard on being a cuddly newlywed twosome). Then the kitteh was given the boot because Dh was twitching so hard, I had to do something. (don't worry, she promptly took up shop with my son in his room)
Fast forward: My son is gone-moved out. Too poor to take the kitteh with him, she's mine again. At the tender age of 13, I think her skin is getting a bit thin and certainly her little feets tell the story of being chilly. So when Dh is out of town, she's got full run of the bed snuggles with me. When he comes back, she instinctively retreats to the foot of the bed (a place he conceded to when *I* was out of town for a month), coming under the covers on the side away from him once she hears him snore. Amazingly, she either jets just before he wakes up in the morning or scoots down to where he won't notice the cat-lump.
Last night was different. I *knew* she was really feeling the cold, so I clandestinely let her under on the bed edge side of me. Dh put his arms around me, felt fur behind my back, and was immediately upset. Fear not, gentle reader, I won. :D In a miracle of miracles, he finally accepted the fact that she was on my side, minding her manners, didn't sleep either of our faces, and didn't interfere with canoodles.
Funny Dh. This is a non-pet person who has come a long way. I've even caught him on the couch with Echo, napping happily. He's also learning quite quickly about life with a geriatric kitteh. Madame is old, cold, and in need of spoilage-concessions must be made!
Do you sleep with your kitteh? What does your S/O think of this? If faced with the dilemma of your beloved telling you your fur kid isn't welcome in the bed, what was your tack? Was your upbringing influential on how you view animals as pets?
